Book of Dead Slot Review
Rich Wilde's trip to ancient Egypt is the slot that made "book" games famous. Ten paylines, one symbol that's both Wild and Scatter, and free spins where a single symbol can fill the screen.
Our Take: Book of Dead has lasted since 2016 for a reason: the free spins are simple and genuinely exciting. Just know which RTP version your casino runs.

Book of Dead Slot Overview
The book of dead slot from Play'n GO is a 5×3 game with 10 paylines. The Book symbol is both Wild and Scatter, and three or more of them start free spins with a randomly chosen expanding symbol.
- The Book is Wild and Scatter at once: three anywhere start the bonus.
- In free spins, one random symbol expands to fill whole reels.
- Several RTP versions exist; 96.21% is the highest.
How the Book of Dead Game Pays
Book of Dead has five reels, three rows and up to 10 paylines (you can choose fewer, but most players keep all 10). Wins pay left to right. The high-paying symbols are Rich Wilde, Osiris, Anubis and Horus; card royals are the low pays. The Book substitutes for every other symbol and pays as a scatter on its own.
Book of Dead Free Spins Explained
Three or more Books anywhere award 10 free spins. Before the round starts, one symbol is chosen at random to be the expanding symbol. Whenever enough of it lands to form a win, it expands to cover each reel it's on and pays on every line, even if the reels aren't next to each other.
Landing three more Books during the round awards 10 extra spins. The best outcome is Rich Wilde as the expanding symbol: five full reels of him is how the 5,000× max win happens.
Book of Dead Paytable and Gamble Feature
The paytable is ordered as you'd expect: Rich Wilde pays most, then Osiris, Anubis and Horus, then the A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols. The four premium symbols pay with just two on a line; card symbols need three. Check the in-game paytable for exact values at your stake.
After any win you can use the gamble feature: guess the colour of a hidden card to double your win, or the suit to quadruple it. It's a 50/50 or 25% guess with no edge, so we'd skip it.
What Other Reviewers Say About Book of Dead
Review sites treat Book of Dead as the benchmark for the whole book-slot genre. Nearly a decade after its January 2016 release, reviewers note it still sits on the most-played lists at most casinos. They consistently quote a 96.21% RTP and 5,000× max win, and praise the free spins for being easy to understand but capable of big results. The main warning is that Play'n GO offers lower-RTP versions (around 94% and below) that some casinos use.
What reviewers like
- Expanding symbol free spins are simple and exciting
- Very mobile-friendly
- A proven classic with a strong 5,000× top win
Common criticisms
- Lower-RTP versions are common
- Base game can be slow
- Dated next to modern slots
Book of Dead RTP, Volatility & Max Win
The highest Book of Dead RTP is 96.21%, but casinos can choose lower versions, so open the game's info screen to check. Volatility is high, and the max win is 5,000× your stake.
Book of Dead Free Play vs Real Money
Book of Dead free play is available in demo mode with the same reels and free spins. It's a good way to see how often the Books land. Casino offers advertised as "Book of Dead free spins" are separate promotions with their own wagering terms, not part of the game itself.
Tips for Playing Book of Dead
- Play all 10 lines. The expanding symbol pays on every active line, so fewer lines means smaller bonus wins.
- Check the RTP in the info screen before you start.
- Skip the gamble feature on bigger wins. It gives no long-term advantage.
